GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operations of buildings, grounds, parks, parkways, open space, and forestry with a focus on irrigation. Parkway related maintenance including but not limited to considerable emphasis on irrigation system maintenance, care of plant material, maintenance of parkway infrastructure, landscape projects, various equipment operation, minor construction projects, litter control, weeds eradication, contractor oversite, snow removal, and assistance with agency special events in various capacities, as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Complies with established safety policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure the safety of self, co-workers, community residents, and visitors.
  • Programs and operates computerized, central irrigation system.
  • Operates and maintains all aspects of irrigation systems.
  • Always wear appropriate safety equipment including protective headwear, eye and ear protection, safety vest, safety shoes, gloves, respirators, and breathing apparatus.
  • Follows all safety guidelines for confined space entry and all guidelines for trench safety.
  • Establishes a daily work schedule for the repair and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Keeps a record of daily activities and creates and manages work orders.
  • Maintains a consistent inventory of parts and supplies.
  • Assists in establishing watering schedules and keeps a written record of all changes to the irrigation schedule.
  • Performs utility locates and responses assigned.
  • Performs litter control.
  • Assists with the completion of a variety of projects in parks, parkways, and open space.
  • Maintains and adjusts equipment and tools, including electric motors, water pumps, sprinklers, trenchers, and irrigation systems.
  • Assists in the training and/or supervision of seasonal employees.
  • Assists with the production of assigned special events.
  • Help to monitor and communicate with landscape contractors.
  • Active participant of snow removal program, assigned to rotating snow crew that will involve some night and weekend shifts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direction of the Parkways Supervisor. Receives additional directions by Technician III on projects and tasks assigned.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May give directions to temporary employees on projects and tasks as assigned.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES

Collaborate professionally with Section, Division, Department and District employees. Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid State of Colorado driver's license and maintain a good driving record.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
  • Follow through with tasks and adapt to changing priorities, process conditions, and circumstances.
  • Work independently on specific tasks with minimal supervision and exercise independent judgment to complete daily activities according to work schedule.
  • Ability to operate electrical tracing devices.
  • Basic understanding and reading of irrigation, utility, and as-built plans.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand water budgets and basic concepts of ET based watering.
  • Strong work ethic and demonstrated desire to learn.
  • Some irrigation system or installation experience.
  • Lift heavy objects, walk and stand for long periods of time, and perform strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions.
  • Use equipment and tools properly and safely.
  • Establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
  • Must be able to arrive at work within 60 minutes of on-call notification.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Lawn and landscape equipment including tractors, mowers, edger’s, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and cement finishing work; valves, filtration devices, gauges, etc. Office equipment such as telephone, calculator, printer/copier/scanner, breakroom equipment, and personal computer.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is required to enter confined spaces and spend a considerable amount of time in wet and muddy conditions.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK SCHEDULE

The hours are generally 6:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The schedule will vary depending on weather conditions, projects, events, programs, meetings, and staffing levels, and will include some evening, early morning, weekend, and overtime hours.

The employee must be able to work a “24 hour” on-call for a period of one week as assigned as well as scheduled on-call weekends. The employee must be able to arrive at work within 60 minutes of notification.

This position is also a part of the snow crew in the winter months and will have varying hours as team members rotate through a primary call schedule and will be required to work nights, and weekends.

Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
