The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Research Assistant to work in the UHealth Campus. The Research Assistant contributes with research investigators by providing research and experimentation support while following established protocols. Further, the Research Assistant performs a clerical role to ensure the smooth operations of office facilities. The Research Assistant will perform a variety of technical duties involved in conducting physical, chemical, biological and other research laboratory tests to obtain data for research purposes. This individual will conduct laboratory methods utilizing the latest methodologies in molecular and cell biology in support of sponsored research, review scientific journals, abstracts and other literature for information applicable to research experiments. Core Responsibilities include setting up and operating various scientific apparatus and making minor repairs, preparing correspondence and answering phones, formulating and maintaining bibliographies and completing applications and forms, ordering laboratory supplies and maintaining culture media reagents, setting up instruments, materials and apparatus and operating laboratory equipment required for specific tests, operating and maintaining laboratory equipment, reviewing and editing various materials for publication and preparing publication schedules, maintaining appropriate logs, records, and study notebooks, understanding and interpreting research protocols and procedures, following standard operating procedures (SOPs). The Research Assistant will work under the direction of the principal investigator, program director or designee, such as a Lab Manager or above. Additional duties include assembling annual and monthly reports and presentations, communicating with the PI or assigned supervisor regarding experimental data, laboratory, or other work-related issues, and adhering to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguarding University assets. Department Specific Functions include work-related knowledge in tissue culture, molecular biology and genetics laboratory test techniques such as PCR, DNA/RNA extraction, cloning of cDNA sequences, amplification of DNA sequences by PCR, protein expression techniques, protein purification, plasmid analyses by restriction digest, protein gel electrophoresis, DNA gel electrophoresis, Northern blotting, Western blotting, Southern Blotting, siRNA/DNA transfections, preferred knowledge in Direct PCR, Phusion, and Tropism Assays, HIV virus production, and envelope cloning for HIV. Collaboration with other employees, good organizational skills, and excellent computer skills are required. Excellent English language skills (both verbal and written) are required. Core Qualifications include a High School diploma or equivalent, minimum 1 year of relevant experience, skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail, ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines, ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion, ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary, commitment to the University’s core values, ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.
