Technical Theater Director .6, 10 month, Exempt

Founded in 1961, Sandy Spring Friends School is a progressive, coed, academically-rigorous day school. The campus is located on 140 acres in the historic Sandy Spring area of Montgomery County, Maryland, and the School is approved by the Maryland State Board of Education and accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools.

Summary: We are seeking an experienced Technical Theater Director to oversee the technical operations of our Performing Arts Center (PAC), which includes a 400-seat proscenium theater, dance studio, music classrooms, and practice rooms. The role encompasses teaching, technical direction, and facility management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Instruction: Teach one high school stagecraft class, developing curricula that instructs students on planning, organizing, and building sets for various school productions.

  • Technical Direction: Lead and manage all technical aspects of theater, dance, and music performances, including set design, lighting, sound, rigging, and A/V support.

  • Facility Management: Oversee the maintenance and scheduling of the PAC, ensuring all spaces are prepared for events and productions.

  • Safety & Equipment: Maintain theatrical equipment and uphold a high commitment to safety standards.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or extension experience in technical theater.

  • Proven experience as a Technical Director in an educational setting. Ability to create and implement effective curricula for stagecraft instruction.

  • Experience in designing, managing, and implementing technical aspects of productions..

Physical Requirements: The ability to navigate stairs as part of daily routines; mobility around a large campus with uneven pavement; bending and squatting as required to participate in activities; sitting and standing for long periods of time during the school day; lifting/carrying boxes up to 25 pounds; and the ability to maneuver as necessary within a regular classroom and office setting.

Salary: $30,000 - $54,000
